Brian Mulroney, because of his background, because of his growing up in that mill town where the mill was American, where American businessmen were the big heroes when they came into town -- they would come into town to look at the mill and then they would go off hunting and fishing -- and they were his heroes. He adored Americans, he was impressed by them. He almost always holidayed in the United States, for instance. He used to follow American politics very, very closely. And when he would go down to Washington as prime minister, talk with Senators...he knew as much as they did about American politics -- he knew who was up, who was down, who was in, who was out, all the gossip, and so on. He was fascinated by American politics. He was fascinated basically by American power. So I always thought of Brian Mulroney as being a) a Quebecker -- he was a true Quebecker, he really felt it in his bones that he was a Quebecker -- and b) that he was American -- that Canadian was kind of like a second choice. He couldn't be President of the United States, so he became Prime Minister of Canada.
